Summer Hollybobs – Cu Chi Tunnels (Ho Chi Minh City)

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an incredible network of tunnels used by Vietnamese fighters in the war against the US. They are so tight that many western-sized people wouldn’t be able to fit through them. We got to go into the tunnels at one point and my back-pack was quite big with all the camera gear (why I didn’t take it off, I’ll never know…) so it was a very tight fit and highly claustrophobic. I felt very uncomfortable and got out as quickly as I could. It’s almost impossible to imagine what it would have been like to be involved in combat down there…

There were also death-traps laid out all over the place. We watched an amazing Pathé style video hailing the heroes of the fight to unite Vietnam for their American-killing exploits. It’s quite a chilling place as you get a sense of how much death their must have been here just a short time ago.

One sour note was the firing range where you could buy bullets to practice your shooting. Didn’t seem quite in fitting with the anti-war message that we encountered most of the time in Vietnam. Anything for a buck I suppose…

Also, are these the worst souvenirs ever?
